Another disgusting police shooting of an unarmed man
First, here's my standard disclaimer when dealing with cop issues: There is nothing better than a good cop. There is nothing worse than a bad cop. With great power comes great responsibility. Cops are sworn to protect and uphold the Constitution and can temporarily suspend it, giving them the legal right to restrain, detain, injure or kill a fellow citizen.
As for this North Miami shooting, to all of you blind cop lovers out there: Do you believe every action cops take is legal and moral? What is the allowable percentage of accidental shootings for a cop? Do you believe cops should serve street justice because of a person's previous problems with the law?
I grew up worshiping cops. Matt Dillon, Adam 12, Joe Friday. They were brave, level-headed, cool under pressure and tried to resolve things without violence.
But as a professional journalist for 35 years and an American citizen, I have covered and witnessed first hand these cruel, inhuman, ignorant abuses of power that often ruin lives of hard-working American Citizens way too many times and especially involving Hispanic men, black men or big men. Although I will say, no one is beyond this abuse.
This video shows a man on his back with his arms in the air clearly telling officers what he was doing, where he worked and that he was taking care of an autistic man.
All they had to do was hold him there and check with his employer to verify.
Instead, one of them decided shooting him was the safest option. Then, after he was shot, they cuffed him and rolled him over AND appear to cuff a clearly mentally handicapped man with Autism!
THE SOLUTION
Here's what should happen, the shooter should be fired and prosecuted to the full extent of the law to reinforce that Cops are citizens and serve to protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States and not to enforce military law on their fellow citizens.
The rest of these officers should be suspended without pay and either fired or retrained depending on the outcome of the investigations.
Further, this man, the company he works for and the Autistic man will all sue and will settle out of court for millions of dollars paid over decades that the taxpayers will have to shoulder because some coward with a badge shot an articulate man lying on his back with his hands in the air in broad daylight who was expressing easily verifiable facts to what appears to me to be a gang of ignorant cowards and bullies.
