CLASSIC VLIVERTARIAN: Me and ol' De Tocquevill

In 1835 Alexi De Tocquevill wrote this for the fledgling new French government.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy. The average age of the world's greatest Civilization has been 200 yrs."

De Tocquevill's book was prophetic and his words were mimicked by many Americans. The BIG question is: Will we do what needs to be done or are we going over the Fiscal Cliff and the end of America as we know it?

I would like to maintain some of the social advances we've made without the tax-and-control of the government shoving everything down our throats and charging us for the pleasure. The fact is, we are in a pseudo-caste system that makes sure we mostly stay in our lot in life.

Sure, a few can break out but the regulations (Which big businesses WANT) keep a lower-middle class family from ever really moving up on the sweat of their brows. The cost of housing, transportation, food are all things we need and are all much more expensive then they should be because of all the fees, regulations, fines, regulations, taxes, regulations and regulations.

Did I mention taxes and regulations?

Also, did you ever meet anyone on welfare who was truly happy and content? Or is it really just a different form of slavery? Certainly we have room for social welfare, personal medical disasters, environmental protection, etc. But the cost has come at the expense of the economy and loss of personal freedoms.

My first day as Czar:

1. Cut the hell out of the budget and reduce the suffocating, stifling control the government has on our personal freedoms.

2. No more IRS _ have a national sales tax so everyone pays their fair share whether they are illegals or billionaires or mafiosos and get the feds out of our finances.

3. Let the gays have civil unions,

4. Legalize drugs and other "vices", tax the hell out of them

5. Phase out several federal departments like education

6. Give the Indians back a lot of lands because they know how to treat me as an adult.

That's day 1.
