Entiat man shoots pet dog six times, killing it

ENTIAT -- A family is distraught and angry after a neighbor killed their dog by shooting him six times. One of the many stray bullets struck a nearby home, narrowly missing a child who was playing in his own yard, witnesses said.

Though Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene on Thursday evening, they did not write any citations or make an arrest.

Entiat resident Aja Patterson, 22, said her father's pit-English bull mix, Ryder, got out of the yard Thursday evening and while her father was looking for Ryder, he noticed Sheriff's vehicles across the field from the house and decided to go ask when he was informed his dog was dead, Patterson said.

One of the stray bullets went through a metal garage door and lodged in a garage wall. The bullet is still there, Patterson said.

"The (Sheriff's Deputies) did not do anything about it," wrote Patterson in a Facebook post. "They didn’t even bother to ask the neighbors across the street if they’d like to press charges against him. I’m just trying to get the word out that what he did was wrong and he should be sitting in jail."

According to Washington State RCW, using excess force to kill a dog and discharging a firearm where it could harm someone or cause property damage is are gross misdemeanors potentially punishable by fines, jail time and/or victim restitution.

Patterson alleges the shooter was outside his house when he first saw Ryder, then went back inside his home to get the pistol before firing six shots into the dog and several other strays.

"He shot our dog six times. If that’s not overkill, I don’t know what is," Patterson said.

She said the deputies didn't interview the owners of the garage that was hit.
