Volunteer of the Month: Louise Redfield

Louise taught school in the Monroe, Washington area for 30 years while her and husband, Joe, raised three sons.

Some of her fondest memories are of her 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms. When her school district received a grant, Louise became the school remedial reading specialist, but her heart was always in the classroom. Louise and Joe always dreamed of retiring to Lakeside. Joe was born in Lakeside and was proud to say that his grandfather was the first Territorial Marshall. Their Montana dream came true in 1990 when they moved to Lakeside. Louise missed her students, so chose to tutor at Lakeside Elementary. Her love of books brought her to the newly formed Lakeside Library (1991), which was occupying a garage at that time. Louise was a volunteer librarian for many years and also served on the Library Board. Louise’s family built a playhouse, which they raffled for the benefit of the library and Louise decided she could help too. She began knitting and selling children’s sweaters over 20 years ago, giving all of her proceeds to the library. Not ordinary sweaters, but children’s sweaters that zip up the back, making it easier for children and their parents. Louise sells her sweaters at WSCL as well as farmers markets. Her knitting since 2010 has contributed over $10,000 to purchase children’s books. Her knitting needles are still clicking, turning out even more sweaters.

Building Again

As West Shore Community Library’s Children’s Collection continues to grow Richard Rowley has continued to build. When Richard heard that the Children’s Department needed more shelves, he was willing and ready to help. He is pictured here putting the finishing touches on his shelving. As Scoutmaster, he helped Jeremiah Jepson, Jacob Jepson, and Justin Pound build a bookcase and display shelves in August of 2017. (See Page 1) As part of Jeremiah’s Eagle Scout project, they worked for approximately 52 hours. Sliter’s Lumber and Building Supply contributed all materials. Again, Richard had a partner in the construction. This time the Women of Rollins chose to contribute the bookcase materials. Thank you, Richard Rowley and the Women of Rollins for your generosity! Pictured above are some of the Women of Rollins, left to right -- Grace Erickson, Vickie Rowley, Jo Deily, Pam O’Mara, Needa White, Stephanie Venrick, Beverly Hubbard, Mindy Greer, Lin Anderson, and Meg McLaughlin
