PRINCIPAL’S NEWS...from Mrs. McIntyre

As the principal of Somers Middle School, I would like to welcome you to a new and exciting school year! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer, I sure did! I am excited to be at SMS and I am looking forward to the new electives and student clubs that we have added this year to expand our established programs.

My goal for the year is to work together to enhance learning for all students. By collaborating with staff, students, families and the community we will be able to enrich the learning for all students, strengthen our school and strengthen our community. I encourage each of you to take a part in the education of the students at Somers Middle School. We had an excellent turn out with 95% attendance at Open House on Aug. 30.

We have some staff changes and additions this year that I am really excited about. Mrs. Lee from the office will be our new Librarian and Shop teacher. Mrs. Amanda Shaffer will be our new Office Manager. Mr. Dorcheus went from 8th Grade math to our District Technology Coordinator. Ms. VanEgmond has joined us from Lakeside Elementary school to teach 8th Grade Math. Also joining us from the elementary school is Mrs. Stevens, who will be teaching 6th Grade Math.

We are very excited to add such wonderful teachers to our team and know that we are going to have a great school year. I have an open door policy and I encourage you to come to me with questions or concerns.

Communication, consistency and organization are very important to me, so please do not hesitate to call (857-3661) or email me (rose.mcintyre@somersdist29.org.

Thank you to J2 Business Products for donating a 4-H Fair Hog to our breakfast/ lunch program. We appreciate your support!

Library Changes This year the SMS Library has made some changes. We removed shelves and rearranged books to make room for a whole class to fit in one area of the library. Also, the library is now open every morning before school and two days a week during the student’s lunch time.

Sweet Tweets Tweets are a form of student recognition sent out to students two to three times per week. Teachers recognize students for small acts of good character that happen in the classroom, hallway, outside, cafeteria, anywhere. Tweets are sent out on Tuesday, Thursday, and some Fridays with our PACE slips. When a student receives a Tweet, they have the option of entering that Tweet into a drawing. In the past, we have drawn four students per grade each month to receive a prize. This year, we plan to recognize the importance of Tweets more regularly by drawing two Tweets each Monday to receive a smaller prize, as well as focus more on the positive behaviors we see that earn Tweets.

Thank You PTA We would like to thank our PTA for purchasing a GagaBall Pit for our playground. The students have learned to play during PE and many students enjoy the game at Lunch!

We need of Substitute Teachers This is a great opportunity to get involved with our schools. If you are interested or have questions, contact Supt. Joe Price at 406-857-3661. http://www.somersdist29.org
